What Mercury retrograde actually is

Mercury is the planet of how you think, talk and get around: messages, plans, errands, short trips, the words you choose. You can read more about its job in the planets guide. It rules two signs, chatty Gemini and careful Virgo.

A few times a year, Mercury seems to slow down, stop and drift backward through the zodiac for about three weeks. It isn’t really reversing. Mercury travels on a smaller, faster orbit than Earth, and when it laps us on the inside track, the changing angle makes it look as if it’s moving backward against the stars. It’s a trick of perspective, a little like a faster runner overtaking you on an inside lane: for a moment, seen against the far side of the stadium, they seem to slide the wrong way. This happens about three times a year, and astrologers call it a retrograde. The day Mercury seems to stand still and turn is called a station.

In astrology, a retrograde turns a planet’s energy inward. Mercury’s usual forward motion is about sending, starting and deciding. Retrograde Mercury is about reviewing, revising and returning.

The shadow periods

Every retrograde has a before and an after. In the weeks before the retrograde station, Mercury moves forward over the same stretch of the zodiac it will soon walk back over. That is the pre-shadow. Themes that will need a second look often show up here first: a plan that seems almost ready, a conversation that doesn’t quite land.

After Mercury turns direct, it has to travel forward again over the ground it covered backward. That is the post-shadow, and it ends when Mercury passes the degree where the retrograde began. Think of it as the cleanup: you put into practice what you figured out, and things gradually pick up speed again.

Mercury retrograde dates, 2026–2028

October 24 to November 13, 2026: in Scorpio

Mercury turns retrograde on Oct 24, 2026 at 07:12 UTC at 20°58′ Scorpio and turns direct on Nov 13 at 15:53 UTC at 5°02′ Scorpio. The shadow runs from Oct 4 to Nov 30. The whole cycle stays in Scorpio, the sign of depth, trust and what goes unsaid. Expect conversations that go below the surface: the honest talk you postponed, the secret you’re finally ready to share, the old feeling you thought you’d filed away. Venus is retrograde at the same time, so matters of the heart and of what you value may ask for a second look as well. Go slowly, listen more than you speak, and let truths arrive at their own pace.

February 9 to March 3, 2027: Pisces into Aquarius

Mercury turns retrograde on Feb 9, 2027 at 17:36 UTC at 5°58′ Pisces, slips back into Aquarius on Feb 18, and turns direct on Mar 3 at 12:32 UTC at 20°55′ Aquarius. It returns to Pisces on Mar 18, and the shadow runs from Jan 25 to Mar 23. Pisces is a dreamy place for Mercury, better at images and feelings than at lists, so details can blur at the start. The Aquarius part turns the review toward friends, groups and your plans for the future. June 10 to July 4, 2027: Cancer into Gemini

Mercury turns retrograde on Jun 10, 2027 at 18:15 UTC at 6°21′ Cancer, moves back into Gemini on Jun 26, and turns direct on Jul 4 at 19:39 UTC at 27°28′ Gemini. It re-enters Cancer on Jul 12, and the shadow runs from May 26 to Jul 19. In Cancer, the review is about home and family: the relative you owe a call, the spare room that became a storage unit, the memories you keep returning to. In Gemini, Mercury’s own sign, the focus shifts to everyday talk, siblings, neighbors and the many small messages that hold life together. Reread before you hit send.

October 7 to October 28, 2027: Scorpio into Libra

Mercury turns retrograde on Oct 7, 2027 at 14:37 UTC at 4°55′ Scorpio, slips back into Libra on Oct 16, and turns direct on Oct 28 at 14:10 UTC at 19°18′ Libra. It re-enters Scorpio on Nov 10, and the shadow runs from Sep 17 to Nov 13. Scorpio asks what you really think; Libra asks what’s fair to everyone involved. Expect to revisit agreements, partnerships and the way you share decisions with someone close. A good time to say “let me think about it” and mean it.

January 24 to February 14, 2028: in Aquarius

Mercury turns retrograde on Jan 24, 2028 at 11:02 UTC at 19°41′ Aquarius and turns direct on Feb 14 at 12:37 UTC at 3°59′ Aquarius. The shadow runs from Jan 8 to Mar 5, and the whole cycle stays in Aquarius, the sign of friends, groups and fresh ideas. Expect to revisit the plans you share with other people: the group chat that went quiet, the shared project that needs a new direction, the idea you dropped too soon. The annular solar eclipse of Jan 26 also falls in Aquarius, right inside this retrograde, so it is a good season to think twice before joining, leaving or launching something big. Mercury turns direct on Valentine’s Day, a fitting moment to say clearly what you meant.

May 21 to June 14, 2028: in Gemini

Mercury turns retrograde on May 21, 2028 at 08:42 UTC at 16°18′ Gemini and turns direct on Jun 14 at 06:05 UTC at 7°45′ Gemini. The shadow runs from May 6 to Jun 29. This time Mercury stays in Gemini, one of its own signs, where the review touches everyday life: messages, errands, short trips, siblings and neighbors. What makes this retrograde stand out is Venus, which is retrograde in Gemini too, from May 10 to Jun 22, so for most of these weeks the planets of talk and of love are both looking back. Conversations about how you feel, and with whom, may need more patience than usual. Write the draft, sleep on it, then send.

September 19 to October 11, 2028: in Libra

Mercury turns retrograde on Sep 19, 2028 at 16:33 UTC at 18°35′ Libra and turns direct on Oct 11 at 10:27 UTC at 3°28′ Libra. The shadow runs from Aug 30 to Oct 26, and Mercury never leaves Libra, the sign of partnership and fairness. Uranus turns retrograde on the same day, and the September equinox follows on Sep 22. Expect to revisit agreements, shared plans and the small negotiations of daily life with a partner or a close friend. Libra wants everyone to feel heard, so this is a good time to listen to the side of the story you haven’t fully considered.

What it tends to bring, and what to do

Astrologers link Mercury retrograde with delays, mix-ups and things coming back: an old email thread, a lost earring, a friend you haven’t heard from in years. None of it is a reason to cancel your life. People sign leases, start jobs and fall in love during Mercury retrograde all the time. The trick is to work with its slower, backward-looking rhythm.

• Back up. Save your files, your photos and your important messages before the station, and keep a copy somewhere safe.
• Double-check. Read the fine print, confirm the time of the meeting, check the address and the train platform. Two minutes of checking saves a lot of fuss.
• Revisit. The “re-“ words are your friends: review, revise, rethink, repair, rearrange. It’s a wonderful time to edit a draft, finish an old project or clear out a closet.
• Reconnect. When someone from the past gets in touch, it may be worth a reply. Retrogrades are good for mending old ties and closing loose ends.
• Leave room. Add a little extra time to journeys and deadlines, and give people, including yourself, the benefit of the doubt when words come out wrong.

If you have to launch something new during a retrograde, you can. Just prepare a bit more carefully, and expect to refine it once Mercury is moving forward again.

The other retrogrades of 2026–2028

Every planet except the Sun and Moon goes retrograde. Venus, the planet of love and pleasure, turned retrograde on Oct 3, 2026 at 8°29′ Scorpio and turns direct on Nov 14 at 22°51′ Libra, a time for reviewing relationships and what you value. Its next retrograde runs from May 10, 2028 at 19°41′ Gemini to Jun 22 at 3°10′ Gemini, with a shadow from Apr 7 to Jul 26, and it overlaps Mercury’s Gemini retrograde. Mars, the planet of drive, turns retrograde on Jan 10, 2027 at 10°25′ Virgo and direct on Apr 1 at 20°55′ Leo, which tends to slow anything you try to force; it has no retrograde in 2028. The slower planets each spend several months a year retrograde, and their stations are quieter background shifts. In 2028, Jupiter’s retrograde in Virgo runs from January to May before it moves into Libra on Aug 24, and Saturn, which enters Taurus on Apr 13, 2028, turns retrograde there on Aug 22 and stays retrograde until Jan 5, 2029:
