The twelve zodiac signs

Twelve signs, twelve ways of being a person. Find yours, meet the others, and see why your sign is the start of your story, not the whole of it.

You probably already know your sign. Maybe you read it in a magazine on a slow Sunday, or a friend guessed it after watching you plan a whole weekend down to the hour. Either way, it is a good place to begin.

Each of the twelve signs is a way of meeting life: one rushes in, one takes its time, one asks a hundred questions, one quietly looks after everyone. Pick yours below, then read on to see how the signs fit together.

What is a zodiac sign?

Picture the path the Sun seems to travel across the sky over a year. Astrologers divide that path, called the zodiac, into twelve equal slices of 30 degrees each. Every slice is a sign. Your zodiac sign, or Sun sign, is simply the slice the Sun was passing through on the day you were born.

Western astrology ties the zodiac to the seasons. Aries always begins at the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, when day and night are about equal, and the other signs follow in order. That is why the dates barely move from year to year.

Your Sun sign describes the heart of you: what lights you up, how you want to shine, and what you are slowly growing into over a lifetime.

Zodiac dates and the cusp question

The dates you see for each sign are averages. The Sun changes sign at a slightly different hour each year, and sometimes on a different day, because our calendar year and the Sun’s yearly cycle never line up perfectly. Leap years nudge things too.

So if you were born on the first or last day of a sign, you may have heard that you are “on the cusp.” Here is the honest answer: there is no blend sign. At the moment you were born, the Sun stood in one sign or the other. You are one sign, fully.

What matters is the exact time. If your birthday sits on the edge, you need your birth date, time and place to know for sure which side of the line the Sun was on. Once you know, you can read your sign with confidence, and you may find that a planet in the neighboring sign explains why you still recognize yourself there.

The signs by element

The twelve signs fall into four elements, each with three signs. The element is the basic temperament of a sign, the fuel it runs on.

  • Fire: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Enthusiasm, courage and the urge to act. Fire signs are the friend who says “let’s go” before the plan is finished.
  • Earth: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Patience, skill and a feel for what is real. They remember the snacks, the tickets and the deadline.
  • Air: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Ideas, words and connection. They keep the group chat alive and see both sides of an argument.
  • Water: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Feeling, memory and intuition. They notice the text you almost sent and ask if you are all right.

The signs by modality

Each sign also has a modality, sometimes called a quality. It describes how a sign moves: how it starts, holds or changes things. There are three, and each has one sign of every element.

  • Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. These signs open the seasons, and they like to begin. Give them a blank page and they will start writing.
  • Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. These fall in the middle of each season. They are steady, loyal and hard to push off course, for better and sometimes for worse.
  • Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. These close each season and get ready for the next. They adapt, adjust and help everyone through the change.

Put element and modality together and each sign becomes unique. Aries and Leo are both fire, but Aries lights the match while Leo keeps the fire burning all night.

You are more than your Sun sign

Your Sun sign is true, but it is only one voice in a choir. Your birth chart is a map of the whole sky at the minute you were born, and every planet in it sits in a sign of its own.

Three placements tell you the most, and astrologers call them the big three: your Sun sign (who you are at heart), your Moon sign (how you feel and what comforts you) and your Rising sign (the first impression you give). A Virgo Sun with a Leo Moon and Sagittarius Rising is a very different person from a Virgo Sun with a Cancer Moon and Capricorn Rising.

So if your sign’s description fits only halfway, nothing is wrong with you. The rest of the story is waiting in the other planets and the houses of your chart.

Questions people ask

How do I find my zodiac sign?

Look up your birthday in the table above. If you were born within a day of a sign change, you will need your birth time and place to be sure, because the Sun changes sign at a slightly different hour each year.

Can I be two signs if I was born on the cusp?

No. The Sun was in one sign at the moment you were born, so you have one Sun sign. You may still feel a pull toward the neighboring sign, and other planets in your chart often explain why.

What is the difference between my Sun sign and my birth chart?

Your Sun sign is one placement: where the Sun was on your birthday. Your birth chart shows where every planet was, plus your Rising sign and the houses, at your exact time and place of birth. The chart is the full portrait.

Why do some websites give different dates for the signs?

Because the dates are averages. The exact moment the Sun enters each sign shifts a little from year to year, so a day either way on the edges is normal.

Has a thirteenth sign been added?

No. Western astrology uses twelve signs tied to the seasons, starting with Aries at the spring equinox. Your sign has not changed.
